SEO for Niche Web Properties: What Actually Worked for Us in 2026
We've built five content sites and one SaaS in the last 18 months. Across RVMapper, Hooked Fisherman, Oil Outpost, Point Strategist, and the TendMgmt marketing site, we've tried a lot of SEO tactics. Here's an honest accounting of what moved organic rankings and what was a waste of time.
What Worked
Static Content Generation at Scale
Our most successful SEO plays have all involved generating large volumes of static, indexed content quickly. RVMapper has 183 blog articles on RV travel topics. Hooked Fisherman has 418 fishing guides and 243 gear reviews. Oil Outpost has 104 articles on heating oil, furnace maintenance, and energy efficiency.
The volume isn't the point — the keyword coverage is. A single article doesn't rank for competitive terms. A 418-article library on fishing topics means we have a page that could rank for almost any long-tail fishing query, and Google can understand us as an authority in the space.
The key is quality at scale, not just quantity. We use Claude to generate topically rich, accurate articles in bulk, then review them for factual accuracy and practical value before publishing. Pure AI-generated content without editorial oversight performs worse than curated content.
JSON-LD Structured Data
Adding Article, BlogPosting, BreadcrumbList, HowTo, and SoftwareApplication structured data to every relevant page has been one of the highest-ROI SEO investments we've made. It's not a ranking signal per se, but structured data enables rich results — and rich results get dramatically higher click-through rates than standard blue links.
RVMapper's /how-it-works page with HowTo markup started getting rich result snippets in Google Search Console within 3 weeks of deployment. TendMgmt's blog posts with Article markup showed increased indexing speed in Google's crawl logs.
The llms.txt File
We added llms.txt files to all of our properties early. This is a newer convention — AI crawlers like Claude.ai, Perplexity, and ChatGPT browse the web. A well-structured llms.txt helps these crawlers understand what your site does and which pages are most important, similar to how robots.txt and sitemap.xml guide traditional crawlers.
It's speculative — no one fully knows how AI crawlers use these files — but the cost is two hours per site and the potential benefit (being cited in AI answers) is significant for niche authority sites.
Canonical URLs Everywhere
We had a phase where our content properties were generating duplicate content issues — the same page accessible at /blog/my-article, /blog/my-article/ (trailing slash), and sometimes with query parameters. Adding canonical tags explicitly to every page resolved this cleanly and took one afternoon per site.
Dynamic OG Images
Every page on every site now has a unique Open Graph image generated dynamically via a Vercel Edge Function (/api/og). When content gets shared on X (Twitter), LinkedIn, or in iMessage, the preview image shows the article title in our branded design instead of nothing.
This doesn't directly affect search rankings but significantly affects CTR from social referrals — and social signals do influence how quickly Google discovers and indexes new content.
What Didn't Work
Worrying About Domain Authority Early
In the first few months, we wasted time thinking about domain authority and link building. In competitive niches, DA matters. But in the niches we play in — RV travel, Connecticut fishing, Northeast heating oil — the competition is thin enough that comprehensive topical coverage and good on-page SEO is sufficient to rank. We've gotten first-page rankings in some categories without building a single backlink.
Optimizing Before Publishing
We had a habit of spending too long optimizing individual articles before publishing — keyword density, header structure, internal links — before getting the content live. Ranking data requires Google to actually crawl and index the page. The faster you publish, the faster you learn. Now we publish first and optimize after seeing which pages actually get impressions.
Trying to Rank Broad Terms
"Fishing tips" is not a keyword anyone at Hooked Fisherman should be targeting. "Striped bass fishing Long Island Sound September" is. Niche properties win by going deep on specific, intent-clear searches. Broad terms have too much competition from established media brands and authority sites.
